Moikka ihanat!

Olen tänään herkku-asialla. Meinasin leipoa tänään marenkiunelmaa, joka piti jakaa ystävien kanssa illemmalla. Koska on helle ja lähden kotoa jo puolenpäivän aikaan, en aiokkaan ottaa herkkua turhaan sulamaan laukkuun moneksi tunniksi. Sori ystävät, mutta tämän herkun kuuluu olla napakkaa, ei sulanutta.

Marenki on minulle eksoottinen herkku, sillä olen alleginen kananmunalle. Voin kuitenkin syödä kananmunaa, jos leivos, missä sitä on, on tarpeeksi kauan ja tarpeeksi kuumassa uunissa. Marenki on siis minulle suhteellisen uusi tuttavuus ja niinhän siinä kävi, että ihastuin ja menetin sydämeni sille! Niin kävi myös muffinssien kanssa, joita maistoin ensimmäisen kerran joitain vuosia sitten.

A life of a freelance

The life of a freelance seems to be a mystery to most of the people. In short it is a flexible, fabulous and tiring lifestyle. Working as a freelance writer and photographer involves lots of coffee, thinking, typing, editing, taking photos, going through hundreds of them, sending them to the customer, interviewing people, going to the places (press conferences, pr-offices, events etc), rushing back to write about it, traveling, testing products, taking notes, sending emails, waiting for the replies, editing, re-writing and re-writing. I mentioned editing and re-writing twice, because that is the minimum you do them per article. Freelancing is staying awake and writing until 4 am. It is a (well deserved) bubble bath on a lazy Tuesday afternoon.

The main positive thing about it is the freedom, the most challenging is the responsibility that every self-employed person faces: you have to sell, sell, sell, take care of your contacts, come up with new bright ideas, have no sick-days nor holidays. Sure you can travel and you can hide under the duvet, but you will still think about the work and stress about the deadlines. It is a glamorous lifestyle and yes, occasionally there is champagne involved (at the events), but mainly it is just hard work. You have to make sure you have money to pay the rent and buy the food during the low seasons as well. This business is seasonal: I can take wedding photos only when there are weddings and in Finland that is from June to August. In July most of the magazines are on holidays and they have double issues in the summer, so no point contacting them then. When you have work it comes first: you don't count your working hours and you cancel dinners to make sure your piece is on editor's desk by the deadline. Most of the time you don't know when and where your next money will come from but then again there is no better feeling than getting your idea through and start doing the research. The very best part of the jobt is when you see your text in the magazine or online. It is a creative job and you will meet new people all the time. So for better and for worse, for richer or for poorer ;), I do love my job.

Dagens

Today I had a work-related coffee that turned into a sparkling wine. It was a meeting at Carusel restaurant arranged by Spotted by Locals. I am writing about Finnish restaurants and shops for them. It is a handy website if you travel in Europe. The locals, like me, write about the spots (bars, cafes, restaurants, shops, boutiques etc.) they like the best/think are worth of visiting. It is great have a dinner at the place where locals eat instead of going to the touristy restaurants! I used it myself when I visited Budapest last year.

Ahoy, Stripes!!

In the past I use to work on a sailing boat, but I had no idea how much I actually adore sailor style. I went through my closet and found many sailor-ish things. I like the simple, preppy, colours; white, red and blue. Sailor style is in style every year, but this summer it really hit me.

Luen, jo työnkin puolesta, paljon lehtiä. Mulla on ollut ulkomaalaisia indie-lehtiä on Suomessa ihan kamala ikävä. Etenkin kaipaan muutamaa Australialaista lehteä. Suomalaisista suurimman vaikutuksen viimeaikoina ovat tehneet ehdottomasti Olivia ja Evita: lehdissä on paljon luettavaa, niitä voi tilata edullisesti määräaikaisina (jatkuu kestona, mutta sen voi lopettaa milloin vain) ja usein kaupanpäälle tulee mielettömän hyviä tilaajalahjoja. Tällä viikolla tulla tupsahti Nora Norwayn helminauhapostiluukusta. :) Lukuisien muotilehtien lisäksi luen Mondoa ja RAW-lehteä. Useilla lehdillä on myös erittäin kivoja blogeja joita seuraan, kun ehdin. Uskon ja toivon, ettei netti voi syrjäyttää painettua sanaa: uudet kirjat ja lehdet tuoksuukin niin mielettömän hyvälle!

Tilaajalahja/ a gift I received

I read lots of magazines (I like to, but I also have to, for work). I have missed Australian magazines since I left the country. From Finnish magazines my favorites are Olivia and Evita at the moment. I adore the little gifts they send to their customers. :) Even though Internet is an useful and ecological thing, I don't think we ever gonna stop reading magazines or books. I love the smell of a new book or a magazine! (Oh btw, they say that the amount of used paper has increased since Internet came along...)
